(This blogpost was published
in Dutch on my blog about the graphic novel project http://afghanistanstrip.blogspot.nl/)

It has been quiet for a long
time around the graphic novel project about the Dutch soldiers in
Afghanistan. It was actually halted as I was busy with another
project. In May this year I went to Afghanistan. Kabul to be
precise. Partly because I heard and recorded so many stories, and
just because I'm totally fascinated by the country.
Earlier I
tried to go embedded with Dutch troops, but my drawings were not very
appreciated by defense-information. They found them too shocking and
realistic. Exactly! I find it very important to show reality.
Nevertheless, I kept looking for a way to go to Afghanistan and I
came upon a remarkable event in Kabul via the facebook page of ISAF.
Sound Central Festival.

A festival for alternative music and
art forms. A safe place where young people can express themselves
freely and safely. I found this so special, I had to see this. I
emailed the organization to visit the festival and make a journalistic comic for a
newspaper, do live sketching and help anywhere needed. They were
interested and took me on as one of the artists of the festival.
After five months of preparation I left for 10 days to Kabul.
Obviously a great experience. Also a chance to see a totally
different side of Afghanistan. I met many young, courageous and
inspiring people who want to build and develop the country. And of
course as a Dutch, it was great to see Afghans enjoy punkrock,
hardrock, metal and more. The country deserves a chance!
The
graphic report was published Saturday, June 8th in the background and
opinion booklet 'Vonk' of the Volkskrant. Thus one of the first
journalistic comics in Dutch newspaper.

I
chose this form because I found it such a special event, the report
also had to impress the reader. A newspaper article about the
festival is very good and the festival deserves the attention. But I
hope it has a dual efficiency through comic: "Hey a comic in the
newspaper! Hey it brings totally different news from
Afghanistan!"
This principle is also applicable on the
graphic novel project about the soldiers and veterans. I'll soon
return working on this project again to try and publish the book this
year. There are still some comics waiting to be inked, a number of
shorter stories that need to be worked out and six additional items
that are included in the book.

Thanks for your ongoing interest. Stay tuned because the project about SCF is far from over. Next week the English version of the graphic report will be published on internet.
The crowdfunding for the graphic report about Sound Central Festival has made it’s goal. Thanks to everybody who contributed to the project!

Also after two weeks of writing and drawing, the reportage for the newspaper is finished. More information about the publication in the Dutch newspaper very very very soon! One week after publication I’m allowed to publish the English version of the comic. Sorry again for not letting everybody know, but the entire focus was on developing the comic for the newspaper.

But is it done after this with the comics about Sound Central Festival?
Not on my watch. The festival was great, I’ve had a lot of interesting conversations, I’ve seen so many things, but it’s just too much to include in just one article. So there’ll definitely be some follow-ups during the rest of the year. I can’t say it’ll be every month or two months, since developing comics just takes a lot of time, and I’ve also got other projects to work on.
I promised also to tell more about Kabul and how I ended up there. YES!! In a few days!

I can't even put some teasers online about the newspaper comic, so in that case a few pictures that eventually didn't make it to the comic.

It were five amazing days. Met a lot of good and interesting people, I was amazed by the energy of the festival and had some real cool parties in the evenings.

So for today I was just working on the reportage. The people at the guest house are really hospitable and I can use the conference room as an office. Listening to all the interviews, making notes, mapping, categorizing and grouping information, organizing photo's and sketching.

I don't want to show to much allready, but it might be cool to explain. I made some smaller sketches and call them 'in betweens'. Those were those small things and details that I really pay attention to. Those kind of things that might just a few people notice or pay attention to, or cameo's. The in betweens will be assimilated into the main pictures. So you might have to look for them again!

I´ll give one away.
You should have seen the crew walking around
with the walkie-talkies whole day. I´ll never forget Travis Beard, the organiser of the festival, calling into the radio: "Qais! Qais! Where are you Qais!?". And of course Qais was running around all day being really busy. And that's a fact!

Oh by the way! I haven't blogged a lot about the rest of my experiences in Kabul. But if you're interested you might like to check out my roommate's blog, Craigus Mcvegas from Australia. I do would like to share one thing. This evening me and Craig went out with the guy from the guesthouse, to withdraw some money at a cash machine. At one of the the supermarkets we went to, some militairy white trucks by with electronic jammers on the roof against electronic devices that might trigger bombs.
So we couldn't unlock the car because it has an infrared key. We had to wait untill they had passed by. But read the rest of it an Craigus's blog.
Yeah it's been quite a while since an update about any comic related items. A shame really because I'm working on a really cool project. Those of you who know about my work, are familliar with the graphic novel I'm working on about Dutch soldiers in Uruzgan, Afghanistan, and my interest in comics-journalism. And right now I'm in Kabul, Afghanistan in a guest house in the diplomatic area, writing a blog again.

Ok so, what I'm doing here is visiting and participating at the Sound Central Festival (YES! Check-out the link!) 2013 in Kabul. An alternative music festival where young people can freely express themselves. Everybody can do what they want. Rap, dance, rock, bang your head on psychedelic metal, puppetry, paint, graffiti, and so on, for boys and girls. And whatever they do, they're pretty good at it! (You should have seen the mosh-pit on the third day!!!) The first day was for the women only and at least 500 to 550 women and girls attended. That's about 350 more than last year. The other two days are for everybody to attent. The second day was more kinda like an arts day for the hippies and the third and last day was ROCK-day! And I'm here to make a reportage of it and do live sketching.
Since I find this a really special festival, I wanted the story also presented in a special form for a Dutch newspaper. And since I'm not such a great writer like a normal journalist, but I do draw quite well, I'll be presenting this story as a graphic report for the Dutch newspaper. And after that also offcourse in English.
I assume that there are not a lot of people who know about this festival. It's kinda hard to imagine perhaps that you held a festival in a 'war-zone'. But hey! Rockin all over the world. So for me, the first two days I did live sketching with indian-ink and watercolors, wanted to do that on the last day as well, but it was just too crowded, so much to see, I did lot's of interviews, took pictures, so the third day was more my journalistic day. And NOW, I really must start working on the comic, filter all the ideas and impressions, listen back to the interviews (and one is really going to take long because another guy had to translate during that interview), sketch some ideas for the comic, make a rough scenario and map for the comic.. Ah no I better stop because I gotta get to work!

I'll get back to you soon, and I'll also give some impression about Kabul itself. Geeeezz the traffic here is suicide!! But more on that, party's, chillin with Afghani's at the guest house, security, guns, barbed wire and walls and police with AK-47, around next week.

Painting again!Almost forgot how relaxing painting really is. After all I hadn't done it anymore since 1,5 year.

There you're standing again.. In the studio, right in front of that painting you started 1,5 year ago. Quite an awesome piece in size (1.00 X 2.00 m) and an image of some kind of apocalyptic chaotic city in panic. What was it meant to become? Will it become whatever it was meant to become?.. I wasn't sure but since I wanted to finally start painting again. I began emptying some paint-tubes, meanwhile I decided to began working again on the sky and strengthen the contrast in the painting, and began blending colors.

Oh by the way. Usually I post detective or comic related items on this blog. But besides comic artist, I'm also occasionally a painter. This is what I also like to do, so why not blog some about it?

I wanted to make the sky more sinister and ominous. Elements like airplanes were supposed to stay or come back if painted over. I short-studied some images and let the painting began. Contrast was strengthened and the sky began to become what I wanted. On the other hand it began to look also like some kind of tidal wave. Best part was I didn't had any sense of time. Just wasn't aware. Only the first half hour.

I returned a few days later with a bitter liquor with the mind set on: just continue and see where it goes.

I liked, and still do, the idea of a tidal wave so that became the focus of the evening. 1,5 year back I placed some electricity poles in the image. They reinforce the depth because of the different sizes. When painting them over, they were being swallowed by the wave and not only reinforcing the depth but also the chaos and panic. After 3 hours of working it's a good moment to sit in a chair just in front of the painting and let the image do it's work. That's when start making plans for the next session. Leave the wave for now, continue with the anchorman in the middle, bring back the airplanes, detail the buildings, bring back the electricity poles, anyway more enough to work on.

Again I didn't quite managed to take a day off during sundays. A new assignment I took, really takes a lot of time and it has a very short deadline. Even though, after a little time in between I was able to finish a detective. Detective Sergeant Westie is a character I created in style of the crime-noir comics-series Blacksad.

My mother's dog is a West-Highland White Terrier named Stefke. A very cool but quite stubborn dog. So the ideal basis for a character in the comic series. And since canids are most often police officers in the series, I thought of this one as well for a detective. I also took some inspiration from Martin Lawrence's appearance as ex-con Miles Logan and then posing as Detective Malone in the movie Bluestreak.

For the first time I watercolored the inked drawings. Never done it before and got the time to use watercolor for comics. I might give it a chance for a next time.

The characters of Blacksad are always well worked out. 'The animal for the character' as would I say. A German shepherd as a police commissioner, a orangutan as a blues musician or an arctic fox as a member of "Arctic Nation", a racist political organization similar to the Klu Klux Klan. Just to give a few examples.
If you get the chance, you should really check out the comics. Not just the artwork is awesome but the stories are very good as well.

That's it for this Detective Sunday. Not sure when the next one will be posted, but just check the blog to find out! I'm about to start it of very soon, but for this one I'm taking some time to work on. Theme for the next Detecive Sunday is Blacksad. One of my favorite crime-noir comics. For this one I some kind of switch the rule. Instead of an existing character from literature to a comic impression, I'll give an impression of a created character into a comic. Blacksad in this case. So stay tuned!

For some more info and a review on the comics: http://comicattack.net/2012/07/dhr-blacksadsh/

Een jaar eerder had ik de band al laten weten dat ik graag voor hun een gave illustratie zou willen maken voor het album. Uiteindelijk werd ik eind oktober vorig jaar ook gemaild of ik voor de band illustraties zou willen verzorgen. Deze tekening vonden ze zo vet;

I tried a European style for this character of the Smoky Barrett-series bij Cody McFadyen.

James Giron is an FBI-profiler and a team-member who works underneath Smoky. He's a very irritable and quite irritating to everyone. Someone like: "I hate everything!" The team prefers to call him 'Damian'. Like to know why? I'd say read the series, if you like thriller-horror. Still he's a team-player and a very good agent and profiler.
And nonetheless one of my favorite characters in the series. (Next time smaller lines though.)
Till next Detective-Sunday!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-22202717405523611522012-01-29T14:42:00.000-08:002012-01-29T14:42:53.149-08:00Detective Sunday #2: Detective Lena AdamsTodays detective of Detective-Sunday is detective Lena Adams of the Grant County series by Karin Slaugter. The style I derived it from is of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.

I chose this style because I find it airing the county feeling. I might give it another try, since I'm not really into the American drawing styles, but I'll get a chance when I work on another character of the Grant County series. She also didn't came out as hardened as she get's to be from the second book on. But I still need to start with the fourth book of the series so I'll get back to Lena again.

But that's for the next Detective-Sunday.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-90995338688008338632012-01-29T05:37:00.000-08:002012-01-29T05:38:33.790-08:00Detective Sunday: Review: Fell Vol. 1: Feral CityYes! The second Detective Sunday. Let the drawing begin! We'll have to wait for that for a few more minutes, because I would also like to share some short comic-reviews now and then on Detective Sundays.

So let's start with my favourit of all.

Fell-Feral City, by Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith
Published by: Image Comics
ISBN: 9781582406930

Cover of Fell Vol. 1: Feral City

I have to be honest, that I do not know a lot about the writer and artist, except that Warren Ellis is a great writer (Transmetropolitan) and Ben Templesmith is a great artist (30 Days of Night). And I'm not going to talk about what other reviewers talked about allready.

Fell Vol. 1: Feral City is the only trade paperback consisting of eight, sixteen page stories about homicide detective Richard Fell. Fell has been transferred from an unnamed city across the bridge to the suburb Snowtown. Something happened which made him be banned from the city, and forced him to work in the industrial nighmare of Snowtown that's literally eating itself and every person in town seems to be insane somehow.

The short storries are presented in a tv-like drama serie. Each short issue is for example a case to solve by Fell and within the greater story there's attention for character development. The reader get's hooked to each story from the first picture to the last, and doesn't get a chance to slow down the pace.
There has been thought well about keeping up this pace by the two creators (I assume). The lay-out of the page are by most a 9 picture (3 x 3) set-up. Sometimes alternated with a wide-shot. So you jump from the next to the next to the next picture, and you might be able to take a breath when you reach a wide-shot.

First page of Fell Vol. 1: Feral City

I conclude with Ben Templesmith's artwork. Templesmith proves to produce incredible art. Dark yet fine and quite beautifull. But what noticed me that it is a somehow simple style, which makes it accessible for the reader to place himself in the characters, like novels. The reader could be the character Fell. Helping him solve the cases, trying to make sense of the crazy town and it's insane inhabitants.

Fell is a great example of crime/detective fiction in comics I've read. And I highly recommend! And with me, more reviewers do!

For the Dutch readers who would like the Dutch issue, look for: Fell 1: Welkom in Snowtown.

Now.. Let the drawing begin!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-7511622866263083782012-01-22T14:25:00.000-08:002012-01-22T14:25:11.066-08:00Detective Sunday #1: DS Roy GraceThe first 'official' detective of Detective Sunday is Detective Superintendent Roy Grace from the Roy Grace series written by Peter James. I derived the style of David Lloyd's 'Kickback'.

I'm getting to know quit a few detectives from the novels I've read. All of the characters have something distinctive, and so has DS Roy Grace. His girlfriend has been missing since he was thirty and he sometimes consults a medium to help him solve his cases. But compared to all the other detectives, Grace seems most natural to me. That was the first image that I came up with and tried to create. Just a regular man. But a most driven detective.

Up to the next Detective-Sunday.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-79623670035284268932012-01-22T08:37:00.000-08:002012-01-22T08:43:41.090-08:00When the answer is right in front of youFrom Monday to Saturday I work on my own projects or commissions. I'm kinda a workaholic and start feeling guilty when I sit down for a couple of minutes. Even if it's a break. But I do think it would be good to take the Sundays of and don't work on projects or commissions. On Sundays I will be theme-drawing but only recreational!
So I hereby declare; 'Detective-Sunday', as an (in my case) a recreational duty-bound day!
'Detective-Sunday' stands for: drawing favourite characters from detective/thrillers I read, in a style that would suit the story. For example: Birdman, Mo Hayder (2000), Dead Simple, Peter James (2005), Blindsighted, Karin Slaughter (2001). Can't help it! I just need an assignment. But I started out quite well last week. I must confess I worked on a page of the Afghanistan-comic, but I forgive myself.

So I'll start on the next character within half an hour, I'm not sure which one next, but I'll find out in a moment. First, let's get back to the title.

About two years ago, I was working on a sci-fi detective. The story takes place in the Netherlands around the year 2030. I'll give a summary later on. I already had most characters in mind, except for the main! Tall, young (about 28 years old), not very experienced, his father is already a chief-commissioner who wants his son rise in ranks and of the streets as soon as possible. He only needs one murder-case to solve and then he would be of the streets.
So I was on my way to the academy, I sat in the train and wasn't even thinking about the character. But I looked up from my newspaper. And there he was! I quickly made a sketch unnoticed, and 'Inspecteur (Detective-Inspector) Lucas van de Welt' was born.

Sketch I made in the train, February 2009 (I thought)

At the moment I don't have the time to work on my own detective-stories, but I better keep myself in some good shape, and work on one of my favourite hobbies.

Since this occurrence, I trust to rely more on coincidence. For example, I don't force titles for stories, paintings or comics. I just let them come up! Because sometimes the answer is right in front of you.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-15196820610929075912012-01-15T15:14:00.000-08:002012-01-22T08:44:16.974-08:00DI Jack Caffery

It was about time for a post again, and some drawings. When I get the time not to work on my own projects or commissions, I draw favourite characters of the books I read. The first I did today is DI Jack Caffery, from Mo Hayder's 'Birdman' (2000). I find it on of the most darkest detectives I had ever read, so when I make this 'fan-art' I try to work it out in a style that would suit the story. So in this case I chose Alan Moore's and Eddie Campbell's 'From Hell' (1991-1996)

I'm not sure yet if this is the only one I'll make of DI Jack Caffery, perhaps in a few months I'll try another style like David Lloyd's 'Kickback' (2006). But for the next time another character first.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-73446255391918357242011-06-07T00:37:00.000-07:002011-06-07T00:37:06.502-07:00JC Graphic Novels: A Notion On Motion Comics (Dutch!)JC Graphic Novels: A Notion On Motion Comics (Dutch!): "A Notion on Motion Comics (Een kritische kijk op geanimeerde strips) Nog geen jaar geleden werd er in Nederland voor het eerst echt k..."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-68528817524368487832011-06-07T00:32:00.000-07:002011-06-07T00:32:20.455-07:00A Notion On Motion Comics (Dutch!)

It's fascinating to watch a new medium gathering its legs beneath it. First it needs to figure out what unique characteristics it has to offer over well-established media like film or television, then determine what characteristics it will keep from its ancestors and what it will cast aside, and finally discover how to use the resulting combination of old and new to create really memorable stuff. Early films and television shows were frequently recordings of stage acts, and early CD-ROM games were often little more basic interactivity grafted onto bad B-movies. Today's new "new media" almost all arise from one common question: how to use the twin developments of cheap, ubiquitous video devices and the Internet to tell stories in new, interesting and hopefully profitable ways.

[Motion Comics: A State of the Art. Geoffrey Long, media analyst, geleerde en creative consultant]

Even wat voorbeelden: Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel en enkele I Am Legend motion comics hebben geanimeerde tekstballonnen maar, geen stemmen. Stephen Kings 'N' omvat stemmen, maar laat de tekstballonnen weg. Watchmen: Motion Comic past zowel stemmen als tekstballonnen toe. Bij Watchmen: Motion Comic is dit ook erg discutabel aangezien een stemacteur de stemmen verzorgd van zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke personages. Bij voorbaat mag deze lat hoger komen te liggen;

The voice acting in motion comics has the same quality potential as voice acting in standard animation, radio dramas, audiobooks or video games, but motion comics may be more likely to benefit from using the same voice actors as in other media, since comics are so frequently cross- media franchises these day. For example, a Batman motion comic might want to capitalize on the existing audience from Batman: The Animated Series by including Kevin Conroy as the Dark Knight and Mark Hamill as the Joker. Given the attraction of motion comics over standard animation as a low-budget medium, however, ponying up for such established voice talent might not be a choice many motion comics creators opt to make.

[Motion Comics: A State of the Art.

Every act committed to paper by the comic artist is aided and abetted by a silent accomplice. An equal partner in crime known as the reader.

[Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics (1994)]

Deze reis gaat me twintig minuten duren.

Amplification through simplification.

[Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics (1994)]

I'm still a sceptic when it comes to the future of motion comics and animated graphic novels. But I've seen that there's hope! The last months I've been commenting on MC's and AGN's, but I would like to get to the way I like it and how I think MC's and AGN's DO have a future.

Last week I followed on Motion Digital Comics, Dead Space:

An ancient artifact referred to as a 'marker' is unearthed, the first one in 200 years. It's a strange rock formation talked about by a spiritual leader 200 years earlier. The markers discovery confirms the religions beliefs and the followers as well as the doubters of the faith will have their relationships with each other changed permanently.

Digitalmotioncomics.com, synopsis

The Dead Space MC is a prequel to a prequel. First comes the MC, then the animated movie, and finally the game from EA. Now I didn't get to see the movie or play the game, but for me there was no need to. The story, characters and plot are new for me, the storytelling was just the right pace and it got me hooked! More importantly, everything is balanced. Visuals, animation, sounds, all ingredients for a MC. There's not too much pressure on the viewer as it has just the right pace of storytelling. Not like other MC's or AGN's I've seen, where animation or visual-art seemed to be more important for the developer. Dead Space is well thought- and worked-out.
Other reviews commented on the visual-art as negative. Being more like scribbles. (The scribble style reminded me personally of Robert Venditti & Brett Weldele's Surrogates, which is one of my favourites!). But that comment came out as the only negative aspect. Most reviewers credited the story and own style.

Now I would like to conclude with my favourite! Metal Gear Solid!

The AGN version of Metal Gear Solid is a comic book that can be watched on PSP. This one reminds me of the MGS cutscenes. It's basically a page-by-page comic book you can either automate as a slideshow or page through manually. Page through manually! Exactly! Decide your own pace! And it gets said a lot about MC's and AGN's. Now that word comes from the community and fans, developers should know where to pay attention at.

- Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel is not only a cool concept for digital delivery of interactive fiction, it will hopefully pioneer a complete new product line and give the PSP a greater edge in the handheld marketplace. I know I certainly wouldn’t mind experiencing more adventures of Snake or even other characters like Sam Fisher or Lara Croft in graphic novel form.-
Gamechronicles.com, review by Mark Smith (2006)

For Iphone a similar concept was developed; Perfect Echo (2010). I didn't have the chance to take a look at it. Graig Smith of PhD Research on Motion Comics, Animation, Comics and Film Studies mentions:
Termed an ‘interactive audio and visual experience for iphone and ipod touch’, Perfect Echo is a free app that introduces the futuristic city of Elysium. The interactivity allows the reader/viewer to dictate the pace of the story at their choosing. In many ways it’s very similar to the experience of reading a digital comic, however subtle sound effects and simple animation techniques add a further layer of depth to this motion comic.

I'm kinda like reaching the point where I would like to conclude my research so far in a first essay. This essay will be a sort of white paper and vision document. In it I'll discuss my research so far, the graphic novel, the graphic novel in the Netherlands, the motion comics and animated graphic novels and finally my vision on further development and introduction in the Netherlands. First I'll post the Dutch version and then translate it in English. So stay tuned!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-64339018535489153702011-05-17T13:38:00.000-07:002011-05-17T13:38:22.033-07:00Don't watch Readmen! Read Watchmen!I tried, but I could hardly finish the first part. Boring! It reminded me of an audiobook I listened a few months back, Face of Death by Cody McFadyen. The book was awesome, but the guy reading it had an annoying voice and he was reading it very slowly, so that I had to speed it up with VLC-mediaplayer.
Watchmen is awesome too. But not the animated graphic novel. The voice is well done and the sound is well mixed, but why have only one voice for all the characters? If it's necessary to use voice-overs than make sure you have the right voice-actors. But I rather have my fantasy make up the voices of the characters. With only one voice-actor you are almost forbidden to make up your own voices for the characters. Next to that, voice balloons appeared in different forms to illustrate whether it's a thought, an aggressive undertone, a nuclear effect (in case of doctor Manhattan) etc. etc.. In this case you get a struggle between the reader's own interpretation and the voice-over.
The animation is well balanced, but it's not adding anything to the original Watchmen. So I was not impressed!

When I think about the way that animated graphic novels and comics are being introduced and published, then I see it as follows;
Blockbusters (Watchmen), expanded stories (I Am Legend) and superhero-stuff take care of introducing the public with the new medium. Programs can be developed to make it a suitable medium for new media devices (like smartphones or the I-Pad). In a while new stories, new characters, new worlds, new scripts can be introduced to fully test the animated graphic novel. And in my opinion that should be right about now. Enough testing and playing safe. Let's take the gamble, what's there to lose?
I'm actually not really into the superhero-stuff. But since I find it hard to find Watchmen, Sparks and Invincible (Because I don't want to pay for them to watch at the moment) I started to review some other comics.

The first I would like to discuss a little is 'Spider-Woman'.

From the first moment on I really liked the intro! Just like the start of a movie added with sinister music. Right after that it starts of in a dark environment and continues until the end. The design and drawings happen to be the style just how I like it! Dark and intense! As for the motion or animation: (Let's keep it animation ok? We're already having trouble defining 'graphic novel') I find it well balanced. It's a little on the edge, but just enough not to get me annoyed and saying this is a cartoon. The voices are well recorded as well as the rest of the sound design. Not like different layers placed on top of each other, but a right mix!
And not to forget the character and story. It stays a short period but I felt kinda fascinated with the main character. When she is thinking, a reverb is added to her voice. It gives way more draft. The conversations are not to fast and are much more easy to follow than N.

The second is 'Gifted' of X-Men.

To be honest, I watched it for only 4 or 5 minutes. This is just what i'm not looking for. For as far as I'm concerned, this is a cartoon, and I was not amused. The sound was quite good. But it's just that the animation was too much! No further marks.

I still hope to get Watchmen as soon as possible and post a review about it. As soon as I found what I'm looking for, I'll also give you some insights into the story I'm writing for my animated graphic novel.
Stay tuned again and have a nice weekend!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541123271665703352.post-63509311257579495372011-04-10T12:58:00.000-07:002011-04-10T12:58:49.345-07:00A graphic what?... ("Een graphic novel? Nee nog nooit van gehoord." )Allright! Step back! I realized that I actually never gave a real definition of the term 'Graphic Novel'. So I owe you I guess! I'll try to get to a good definition as best as I can, since I've seen a lot of different definitions in the last years. And as the graphic novel is a rising medium in the Netherlands not everybody is yet acquainted with the term.

The graphic novel is a narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader using sequential art in either an experimental design or in a traditional comics format. (from the Oxford English Dictionary, I find this the best definition).
As much media do, the comic developed itself during the sixties and from there on. With the new millennium, the graphic novel rose in popularity in the Netherlands, and the term was adopted. But...! The term got adopted, as well as adapted. I find it very annoying when these situations occur in the Netherlands. It makes it hard to get to a well definition. Eddie Campbell also encountered this problem and formulated his Graphic Novel Manifesto (Thank you Eddie!). Because the term is now used to explain that comics are no longer just for kids but for the big audience. The graphic novel marked the adultery of the comic. And here's another definition that is used: "A graphic novel is a layered story, wrapped in compelling images." Themes vary from autobiography, humour, war, fantasy, love, music, philosophy and so on, and often in a literary style aimed at the adult reader.

This week I... well.. Ok. I watched the digital comic adaptation of Stephen King's N. I'm still more used to say: "read comics." This also occurs when I say that I listened a book instead of that I read a book, since I listen to audio-books. I get to that later.

I was under the impression of this graphic adaptation. I was partially dragged into the story. I did a quick analysis and summarized what I liked and disliked.

The story of a man obsessed about a creepy place and discusses it with his psychiatrist, who then inherits the obsession of his patient, fascinates me and is stimulated by the pace, the story is told. The drawings done by Alex Maleev, colored by José Villarrubia, really emit the atmosphere of the situation the antagonists find themselves placed in. There's not to much of animation, what could almost make it just another sort of short-animation.
It can be viewed on small screens like a mobile phone or on the website. Almost exactly the way that I can imagine the form of the digital/animated graphic novel. There are 25 episodes, of each 1.30 min.. Now they can all be found on the website, but in August 2008 you could download a new episode every week or so.

So let's get to the 'dislikes'. I wasn't very fond of the sound-design. It was overdone, which leads to separation in my experience: The images, and the sound. I find they should be merged. The voices where way to fast. In a way it contributes to the atmosphere of the entire story, but this is just what I mean with putting pressure on the audience. I favour to decide my own pace.

Because of dyslexia I have some trouble reading books. I tackle this by 'reading' audio-books or radio-dramas. Like with books I can decide my own pace and, depending on the reader, get dragged into the story most of the times.
Two of my favourites are: 'The Whole Truth, David Baldacci' (Hachette Audio) and 'De Moker, NTR' a radio-drama. The Whole Truth is very well read and some scenes are supported by music, playing softly on the background. I remember I rewind some scenes because they were so cool!
De Moker is a Dutch radio-drama about the battle of De Wallen, Amsterdam. The voices are done by well-known actors. It's like you're listening to a movie! Watch a small making-of down here!

So!? Well simply saying: combine the 'like'-elements of 'N', with the elements of the audio-books and radio-drama right? Not just yet! I hope to check out the digital graphic adaptation of Watchmen, The Dark Knight and Sparks.
I'm also working on a thriller set in Amsterdam. I'll post the designs of the main-characters very very soon! Stay tuned!

Might you just have a MUST SEE tip on a motion comic, let me know!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08258972844948934994noreply@blogger.com0
